Komi Can’t Communicate Season 1 Episode 5 Review

Nakanaka Fantasy V The Rise Of Ramen Core
So briefly in a purely technical front. I had a little bit of a rough time starting up the DVD today. I guess I should put a DVD cleaner on my list for the future.

So we have mostly follow ups… And one new friend. Two if you count the addition of Makeru Yadano who technically is a rival?

So we are back to Makeru, who breaks the fourth wall by addressing the audience. Again. Also she recaps physical exam day… Why? It wasn’t that long ago it happened. Oh well.

She still wants to beat Komi. And she ends up losing to get again. No chance for an illusion of a tie here. But Komi extends the hand of friendship… Oh wait no she’s too scared to do that.

Anyway misinterpreting Komi’s intentions (inability to shake hands), a common trait of this Anime, Makeru surmised that Komi wants the rivalry to continue. And so it has. They just had her briefly rival Komi in Volume 10 (Season 3)…

Yes yes. I am many volumes behind. I’ll get to the end eventually. That is to say by the time I get to Year 3 Komi graduated and the series ended. So… Yeah.

Najimi talks Komi into having her and Tadano over at her place. They meet Komi Shuko for the first time. Aka Komi Shoko’s mom, the eternally 17 year old adult woman. Cute visit that reveals a bit of Komi’s past.

Fingering for ramen, Komi Tadano and Najimi are going to visit a ramen shop after school. But which one? Enter Agari, now going for the first time into her more confident Ramen Core mode.

Thing is? We don’t find out about Ramen Core just yet. It needs to be another trip to a failing eatery that we finally are told about how Agari is better known in the internet as food critic Ramen Core.

Cute. Also Komi meets another introvert in the powerful yet soft spoken ramen master of the place Agari recommends from her cast Ramen Core experiences. Komi & The Ramen Master bond well.

That being a us to the one eyed Nakanaka. Who, according to the manga, is going through a phase. A phase where she seems to be an escaped character from a Square Enix prototype VR Final Fantasy game. Is that normal?

She tries to bond with Komi while lost in the most of her RPG obsessive madness. But it isn’t until Komi reaches out to pair up with her at gym that they become friends. A cute moment.

We will see more of Nakanaka and her phase… Until Season 3 slash Year 2, when a majority of the cast is relegated to mom or character status to make room for Rumiko. Her friends. And… Whoever else in Year 2 steps up as friends.

The end credits contains the scene where Najimi steaks Tadano’s umbrella after school, and this opens the opportunity for him and Komi to share an umbrella on the wall home.

The manga Chapter this is from? Full narrative and dialogue if I remember right. Here? A few notes and Komi messages. Otherwise mostly silent to make way for the ending theme. That’s ok.

The scene doesn’t lose any of its charm by this choice. In fact you might like the Anime version better than the Manga for this scene. Viewers choice and all.

And that is Episode 5. We might as well go through the whole season. We won’t stop until next Sunday and Episode 12. Then we can get back to Sinbad, Ultraman x2, and start up Beowulf The Series. For starters. So see you tomorrow as we reach Episode 6.
