Komi Can’t Communicate Season 1 Episode 4 Review

It’s A Sociopathic Day In Yamai’s Neighborhood…
Who’s ready for a rousing game of Yandere Clues! Got your handy dandy notebook? Your pen? Your Stranger Danger Whistle? And Robocop’s Auto-9? Good! Let’s play!

First off its class fitness exam day. Where your failings is publically on display for all to see. Clearly events like this are geared to prepare young Japanese boys & girls for Office Culture Life!

Yeah… Japan?!? When I went to school I didn’t have a well documented case history of youth suicides in my country to consider… You do! Stop! Enough! Get help, Japan!!

Anyway this is the introduction of Makeru, the overtly competitive one. I guess it’s good that we rarely see her in Season 3 to 4 aka Year 2, but… If you like her then you better absorb all the Makeru you can now.

And now, proof positive that every non series character you see walking about a manga or anime is a holographic projection. Or a lie. And that is… The taking of Tadano by Yamai.

Think about it. Busy sidewalk on a typical weekday morning. Even if it’s light pedestrians and cars? Did NOBODY see Yamai subdue Tadano, drag his unconscious body all the way to get affluent home, and hide him in her room?!? NOBODY!!

Yeah. That’s a level of ignorance of the facts that even Christian Apologetics would have a hard time believing. Also? Yamai is such an absolute deranged pervert after kidnapping Tadano?!? Sharon Stone’s character from Basic Instincts is afraid of her!!

Uhh… So Yamai say in Tadano’s chair all day. In a strict rules governed school system where sneezing wrong gets you written up. Really?!? Yeah… I’m going to have to tap the X for doubt button.

Also it takes Najimi several minutes to realize that Yamai has secretly replaced Tadano with herself. Way to bring in the upshot there Yamai. But to be fair? She’s not the only clueless one.

So from the New Years story we know that Yamai’s family is fairly affluent. Enough to vacation in the beach of Waikiki During the busy new year season. So… Is her house empty during the day? Nobody walked into her room once to find Tadano.

Or are her folks just used to Yamai randomly kidnapping people to kill on a whim. How did this slip by everyone’s notice for… What! Several hours!! What???

Najimi tricks Yamai into inviting her and Komi to get house. They find Tadano in her closet. They free him, but are confronted by the crazed Yamai brandishing… Very sharp metal chopsticks.

Yeah. I’m pretty sure she had a kitchen knife in the manga. But then again mangas have a lower threshold on the things they can get away with, as opposed to Japanese over the air television… wait!

Wasn’t this always a Netflix exclusive?!? Didn’t that give them more latitude with what they can show?!? I seem to remember this being Netflix’s big acquisition. So much so it might explain why Japanese TV tried to make Live Drama Komi Can’t Communicate.

Komi walks Tadano out, being self assertive and shouting down Yamai. Najimi is left behind as a joke… Until you realize she’s also there to talk Yamai down from harming herself.

The next day is the touching emotional moment where Komi tries to end her friendship with Tadano. The Anime did this scene well. All the emotion is here, and the music choice is perfect. This scene gave me the feels.

In the end Tadano asserts that he chooses his friends and wants to be Komi’s friend. So touching! Also Najimi arrived with Yamai who finally is told about Komi’s communication disorder. She finally gets to become Komi’s friend.

And, as you see through Season 1-2 she also befriends Tadano too as she is nicer to him over time. So that’s great! A pity we barely see Yamai’s sociopathic childhood friend before Year 1 ends and she vanishes. But that’s a story for another time.

I had a bit of a hiccup playing the DVD today. What? But I bought it brand new supposedly… China! If anything happens I’ll let you know. Otherwise Episode 5 is tomorrow! So see you!
