SMBSS 1989 Mario Of The Deep Review

Down Under The… Bermuda Triangle.
Apparently part of the kingfoms that connect to the Mushroom Kingdom? Connects to the Bermuda Triangle. Because shipwrecks to loot for gold?

Good news is that we have a staple SMB aquatic enemy (The Bloopers aka enemy squids) prominent in this episode. Another plus? Beautiful female Mushroom Mermaid…??

Downside. Koopa Bowser is the enemy again. Really? Wart Jr might have been the perfect underwater villain… But this entire SMB2 cartoon has ignored Wart Jr so why not.

The four have come in their underwater sub bathtub (again with the submersible bathtub) to help Neptune (Absent king of the Aqua levels in the games) with BarriKoopa… Bowser.

Wow. Bowser sports more upgrade costumes in this one series than Mario in his games! Not that his suits help him win… But he sure has a wide variety of guises he wears throughout the series!

The four save a lovely mermaid from a gang of Bloopers. She takes them to where her fellow Merfolk are enslaved. Working to loot sunken ships of their gold coins.

Neptune? Koopa has already taken control of Atlantis and captured the king. Much to Boeser’s dismay it turns out that King Neptune in this series in the original undersea hippie.

Yup. I’m pretty sure he’s in years before that hipster otter with an addiction for scallops from the Animal Crossing series. Yup. He gets serious about beating Koopa after he’s set free.

The four try to save the merfolk. Right down to Princess Toadstool trying to seduce the Bloopers as a sexy female Octopus… Ugh. They’re captured and locked into a ship with dangerous creatures.

By dangerous I mean a school of piranha fish and a crab mislabeled as a lobster. They escape, and decide to save Neptune in order to stop Koopa. The female mermaid leads them to the King.

This is rather quick. They sneak into his cell, free him, then attack Koopa and his Bliopers. The four riding sea horses, and armed with mini swordfish. King Neptune attacks with a giant humpback whale.

That makes sense. Thanks to Star Trek IV The Voyage Home? Humpback whales are the in thing to attack with underwater. Thanks Leonard Nimoy! Anyway Mario fights Koopa and wins.

Koopa runs away… Didn’t you know? It’s Bella as last to run under the sea… Sonehow. Mario’s swordfish chases Koopa off into the underwater horizon. The end.

Ok episode. And it features a new prominent underwater enemy. But this doesn’t feel like a real underwater Mario adventure. Not enough swimming and fireballing enemies. Oh well.

Next time it’s all about the Greece mythology. As we find out that Toad knows the Legendary Hero Heraclese… I mean Hercules… No. Wait. That’s Hercufleas!

Get ready to sit, stay, and bark at the turning of Hercules (in before Religious Guy Kevin Sorbo becones Hercules) into Hercufleas. Does this episode need a squirt of Advantage Plus? We will see… Bye.
